[related tag = theft] According to the Boston Globe, the thefts took place during the American Public Health Association conference back in November and the American Society of Human Genetics conference in October. The events were both put on by Massachusetts Convention Center Authority, and were headquartered at the MCCA's Boston Convention & Exhibition Center in South Boston. However, the MCCA has made it clear that it was not inside the facility where the financial information was stolen. Instead, it was done at area restaurants and bars visited by convention-goers. “After running internal checks and working with our customers, we found that no alleged theft occurred in any MCCA facility and appeared to occur at bars and restaurants across the city,” Daniel said in a statement. Many guests stayed at the Westin Waterfront hotel, which is adjacent to the convention center. Reps for the hotel's bars, MJ O'Connor's and City Bar, told the Globe that the information breach did not take place at their businesses. MCCA spokesman Mac Daniel also told the Globe that several employees of the convention center were also victims of the scam.
