Restaurant workers struggle to make ends meet with low hourly pay.

Restaurant workers get the short end of the stick from New Jersey lawmakers, and they are not going to take it sitting down. Employees around the state were eager for the New Year because as of January 1, 2014, New Jersey’s minimum wage rose from $7.25 an hour to $8.25 an hour. The dollar increase in pay outraged restaurant employees who did not receive a raise causing a debate among customers and food servers.
Food service workers including bartenders, waiters, and dishwashers earn less than minimum wage at about $2.13 per hour, relying mainly on their tips, if they are eligible. Restaurant owners and managers fear that paying their employees more will cause a low profit margin and give less opportunity for hiring. Customers have also expressed their concerns stating that they would not tip or would tip less if restaurant workers received a higher salary.
